Introduction

Faster, smarter and more powerful! ChemDoodle 3 is the next installment of the popular chemistry desktop software. ChemDoodle is a chemical structure environment with a main focus on 2D graphics and publishing to create media for your structures, reactions and spectra. ChemDoodle contains all of the features you would expect from software that costs thousands of dollars for a very reasonable $59.95. ChemDoodle is very well supported and is being used in hundreds of institutions around the world.

If you are looking for a chemical sketcher or an alternative to your current chemical drawing application, there is no better choice than ChemDoodle. ChemDoodle works on all operating systems, has one of the largest feature sets in the industry, has the most customizable graphics, pastes scalable vector graphics into Microsoft Office, iWork and OpenOffice (among others), and can read and write all of our competitors’ formats.

Mac OS X Support

Even though ChemDoodle is a cross platform Java application, you may be amazed by how nicely integrated it is with Mac OS X. The application looks native, installs from a disk image, works with the dock, has Mac OS X specific items and works with Apple iWork. That isn’t by chance! We work very hard to make sure that ChemDoodle fits in perfectly to each operating system it is used on. It gets even better for Mac OS X users as our developers are all huge Apple fans and first develop and polish ChemDoodle solely on Mac OS X and then integrate the application for Windows and Linux. Apart from our favoritism towards Macs, you may wonder why we chose to use Macs as our primary development platform. Well the answer is that using Mac OS X is the only way to provide truly platform independent and well integrated Java applications. The developer tools provided on Mac OS X allow us to create native executables from our Java resources; allow us to create native icons for all operating systems, and allow us to access special Mac OS X functionality that would be very difficult to integrate if our development was performed on Windows.

Installation

ChemDoodle installation is simplest on Mac OS X. We provide a customized ChemDoodle folder with everything ready to be used in a downloadable disk image. Just download the disk image and drag the ChemDoodle folder to the Applications folder to install it. Simple as that!

Application

ChemDoodle provides a quality Mac OS X experience. ChemDoodle implements the system menu bar and provides the Mac OS X type ChemDoodle, Window and Help menus. We took special care to craft the visual presentation of the user interface to closely match Mac OS X applications, even beyond the abilities provided through Java.

ChemDoodle is also fully compatible with the Mac OS X operating system incuding file associations, Dock support and drag and drop functionality. We are also developing additional Mac OS X only features such as chemistry Quick Look functionality and AppleScript support. Additionally, the system clipboard functionalities are custom built for Mac OS X to easily interact with other Mac OS X applications.

Integration

Unlike our competition, ChemDoodle is fully compatible with Mac OS X applications. You can copy and paste scalable vector graphics directly from ChemDoodle into Apple Mail or Preview. Apple iWork is also compatible and ChemDoodle provides round-trip editing with iWork Keynote. ChemDoodle is the only chemical application to provide support for Apple iWork.

Web Integration

ChemDoodle also provides interactive HTML5 chemistry web components called ChemDoodle Web Components for producing rich chemical web pages. This utilizes HTML5 canvas and WebGL technologies, both started and developed by Apple. These components work beautifully in Apple Safari on all operating systems and on iPhone OS devices (iPhone, iPad). We do not and will never support Adobe Flash.

For a great experience producing chemical graphics, there is no better choice than ChemDoodle on Mac OS X. We spend a lot of effort and time fully supporting the platform and it clearly shows.
